The visible particulate matter in these kinds of smokes is most often made up of carbon (soot). Other particulates may very well be composed of drops of condensed tar, or strong particles of ash. The presence of metals inside the gas yields particles of metal oxides. Particles of inorganic salts may be fashioned, e.g. ammonium sulfate, ammonium nit
